The bedroom

[ May, 2013 ] This is the parents’ bedroom in Shakespeare’s birthplace in Stratford-upon-Avon in England.

William Shakespeare was born in this room.

According to the explanation of the guide in this room, the reason why the bed is shorter than the current ones is not because people were shorter, but because they slept in the position of half sitting up.

They believed that if they slept lying down, the devil would take their spirit away.

The children slept in this room until they became 5 years old.

When they passed the test that they can carry a candle themselves, they can move to the children’s room.

There are two children’s rooms, one for girls and another for boys.

The boys’ room has got the staircase for everyone to use, so the room was not really quiet.

On the other hand, the girls’ room did not have a fireplace, so they had to stay cold.

Around the 16th century, only one third of the babies could grow up to the adult age.

Especially the death rate for male babies were higher.

People believed that the value for boys were higher and that is why the devils took them.

So people let boys wear girl’s dress like the one in the photo.
