Depopulation

Depopulation

[ Sept.2013 ] The terraced fields are spread inland of Tinos.

The guide said “Because the land is hilly, people use every small space for farming”, but in fact, those fields looked wasted.

Also in villages, not many people were around.

One of the tour members asked “why are there no people here?”, then he said rather sadly, ” young people left the island to Athens and other big cities.

Villages have been losing population”.

Well, I think he was one of them who left the island and in the end came back here.

When the terraced fields were cultivated, the windmills which are dotted around the island were used, too.

These windmills looked as if they were ancient, but only 50 – 60 years ago, they were working.
