Grand Canal and James Joyce

Grand Canal and James Joyce

[ Feb.

2014 ] Unfortunately the weather was bad on the second day of our stay in Trieste, Italy.

We started off to the newer town with our umbrellas open.

The new town was developed in the 18th century, filling the previous salt pan.

In the middle of it, there is the Grand Canal which was built in the middle of 18th century.

The name is “Grand Canal” but in fact it is like a long rectanglar pond with small boats on the both sides.

In the past, apparently there was a swing-bridges so that large ships came in and the canal was a bit longer.

On Ponte Rosso, one of the bridges over the canal, Irish author James Joyce is walking.

He lived in Trieste for about 10 years from 1905.

He was an English teacher in Berlitz in one point, which made me have an affinity as I was a student in this language school once.

At the foot of his statue, it said ” My soul is in Trieste”.

This was a part of his letter to his wife in 1909 when he went back to Dublin temporarily.

The photo of him is here.
