Bachkovo Monastery is one of Bulgaria’s oldest and most important Orthodox monasteries. Founded in 1083, it lies at the foot of the Rhodope Mountains, surrounded by forests and the peaceful valley of the Chepelare River. Second only to Rila Monastery in importance, it has been a major religious, cultural and artistic centre for centuries.

The monastery is renowned for its beautiful medieval architecture, peaceful courtyards, remarkable frescoes and rich history. Influenced by Byzantine, Georgian and Bulgarian traditions, it preserves an exceptional artistic heritage and remains an active place of worship as well as one of Bulgaria’s most visited historical monuments.

What to see at Bachkovo Monastery

The main attraction is the Church of the Dormition of the Virgin, home to a revered icon of the Virgin Mary believed by many pilgrims to possess miraculous powers. The church is richly decorated with magnificent Orthodox frescoes.

Visitors should also explore the historic medieval refectory, famous for its impressive wall paintings, and the Church of the Holy Archangels, one of the monastery’s oldest buildings.

The monastery’s peaceful courtyards, wooden galleries, fountains and gardens create a relaxing atmosphere. Nearby walking trails lead to the Chapel of Saint Nicholas and scenic viewpoints overlooking the Rhodope Mountains.
