Famagusta is one of the most fascinating destinations in Cyprus, a city where centuries of history meet beautiful Mediterranean beaches. Located on the island’s eastern coast, Famagusta has been shaped by Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Lusignan, Venetian and Ottoman civilizations, leaving behind an extraordinary architectural heritage. Today it offers visitors a unique combination of medieval monuments, historic churches, ancient city walls and crystal-clear waters.
The heart of the city is the Old Town, surrounded by imposing Venetian walls that remain remarkably well preserved. Walking through its narrow streets, visitors can admire impressive landmarks such as St. Nicholas Cathedral, later converted into the Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque, the Venetian Palace ruins and numerous Gothic churches. Just outside the walls lies the famous Ghost Town of Varosha, abandoned since 1974 and one of the most intriguing places in Cyprus, offering visitors a glimpse into a unique chapter of the island’s modern history.
During our visit we discovered a city full of contrasts, where history, culture and seaside scenery blend together perfectly. Exploring the old streets, admiring centuries-old monuments and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere made Famagusta one of the most memorable destinations of our journey through Cyprus.
