Shifen
Hidden among the green mountains of northern Taiwan, Shifen is one of the country’s most charming destinations. Once a thriving coal-mining town, it has transformed into a popular day-trip destination famous for its sky lanterns, historic railway and impressive waterfall. Easily reached from Taipei via the scenic Pingxi Line, Shifen combines local traditions, beautiful landscapes and a unique atmosphere that attracts visitors from around the world.
The village is centred around the historic railway tracks, which run directly through the main street. Between train arrivals, visitors stroll along the rails browsing souvenir shops, cafés and traditional food stalls. Shifen is especially famous for its colourful sky lantern tradition, where people write wishes and messages before releasing paper lanterns into the sky, creating one of Taiwan’s most memorable cultural experiences.
Just a short walk from the village lies Shifen Waterfall, often called the “Little Niagara of Taiwan.” Nearly forty metres wide, the waterfall is surrounded by lush subtropical forest and can be admired from several viewing platforms connected by well-maintained walking paths. It is considered one of the island’s most beautiful natural attractions.
The historic Pingxi Railway remains an essential part of Shifen’s identity. Originally built to transport coal from the surrounding mines, the railway now carries visitors through valleys, forests and picturesque mountain villages, offering one of Taiwan’s most scenic train journeys.
Local markets and food stalls invite travellers to sample authentic Taiwanese street food, freshly prepared snacks and traditional desserts. The lively yet relaxed atmosphere makes Shifen an ideal destination for visitors looking to experience everyday Taiwanese culture beyond the capital.
