Moret-sur-Loing is a picturesque medieval town in the Seine-et-Marne department of the Île-de-France region, close to Fontainebleau and its famous forest. Built beside the River Loing, it preserves the character of a historic fortified settlement, with medieval gateways, sections of defensive walls, old houses and narrow streets leading towards its church. The town became part of the French royal domain in the eleventh century and was later associated with several important figures in French history.

Its riverside setting is closely connected with Alfred Sisley, the Impressionist painter who lived in Moret-sur-Loing and repeatedly depicted its bridge, mills, church and waterside scenery. Visitors can still recognise many of the views shown in his paintings, making the town an appealing destination for travellers interested in art as well as medieval heritage.

What to see in Moret-sur-Loing

The historic centre is entered through impressive fortified gateways such as the Porte de Samois, also known as the Porte de Paris. Inside the walls, stone streets lead towards the Church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativité, one of Moret’s most distinctive monuments and a subject painted several times by Sisley.

A walk beside the Loing reveals the old bridge, former mills and peaceful riverbanks that inspired the artist. A route dedicated to Sisley helps visitors compare today’s scenery with his paintings, while guided walks following in his footsteps are also organised locally.

Another unusual attraction is the Moret Barley Sugar Museum, which explains the history of the traditional sweet associated with the town’s Benedictine nuns. The municipal museum also presents archaeological, historical and fine-art collections.

When to visit Moret-sur-Loing

Spring and early autumn are excellent for riverside walks and exploring the medieval streets in mild weather. Summer is also suitable for cycling, canoeing and other outdoor activities along the Loing.
