A disappointing riad

A disappointing riad

[Dec. 2025] Our Morocco trip has finally reached Marrakesh, our final base.

Marrakesh is the most bustling and chaotic city we’ve visited so far.

As we entered the city, the traffic was extremely chaotic.

Motorcycles weaved through the waves of cars haphazardly, resulting in a constant sound of honking horns.

Moreover, upon closer inspection, we saw women riding behind men on motorcycles, with babies trapped between them.

At one point, we saw two children trapped.

Add to this the horse-drawn carriages for tourists, and it was a complete mess.

Our driver, Youssuf, grumbled, “I can drive for hours elsewhere without getting tired, but here I’m exhausted after 30 minutes.”

Not only that, Youssuf gave us a whole series of warnings he hadn’t given us before.

We were warned to be careful of restaurants, and that there were persistent vendors who would paint patterns on people’s hands with henna and so on.

It seemed like there were a lot of people in Marrakesh who tried to take advantage of tourists.

Finally, we arrived at our accommodation, Riad Jolie, but it was the worst we’d stayed in so far.

The room was so tiny, with just a bed in it.

There was no desk or proper dresser.

Furthermore, the air conditioner was old, and the heating didn’t work well.

The staff at the accommodation were also not very pleasant when we arrived (though this improved later).

The guests also seemed to be of low quality; when we arrived, a large Spanish family was incredibly noisy.

We were staying here for three nights, the longest of all our accommodations.

I was very disappointed.

Youssuf didn’t say it explicitly, but it seemed there had been a mistake with the reservation.

Therefore, on our last day, the fourth night, we were scheduled to move to a different riad.

It wasn’t a problem serious enough to warrant demanding a room change, so we put up with it, but the fatigue from our travels made us feel rather gloomy for a while.
