Ananuri

Ananuri, a medieval fortress among mountains and turquoise waters

Ananuri is a small village in Georgia’s Mtskheta-Mtianeti region, best known for its impressive fortified complex. Standing beside the Aragvi River and overlooking the Zhinvali Reservoir, it is surrounded by a striking landscape of green mountains and turquoise water. Its position on the road connecting Tbilisi with the Greater Caucasus makes Ananuri a natural stop on journeys towards Gudauri and Kazbegi.

For centuries, the fortress was associated with the eristavis, or Dukes of Aragvi, powerful feudal rulers who controlled this strategically important route. Much of the complex visible today dates from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and represents an outstanding example of Georgian fortified architecture. Ananuri is also included on Georgia’s UNESCO Tentative List, although it is not currently a World Heritage Site.

What to see in Ananuri

The main attraction is the Ananuri Fortress, enclosed by substantial defensive walls and towers. Within the complex are several religious and secular buildings that reflect different periods of its long history.

The most important building is the Church of the Mother of God, completed in 1689. Its stone façades are decorated with elaborate carvings, including ornamental motifs and a large cross, while traces of historic frescoes survive inside.

From the fortress walls and towers, visitors can enjoy excellent views across the Zhinvali Reservoir. The combination of medieval stone architecture, blue-green water and surrounding mountains creates one of the most recognisable landscapes along this part of the Georgian Military Highway.

Ananuri can easily be included in a longer journey towards Gudauri and Stepantsminda, making it an ideal cultural stop before entering the higher Caucasus.

When to visit Ananuri

Spring, summer and early autumn are particularly suitable for combining a visit to the fortress with a journey through the surrounding mountain landscapes.
