Svaneti is a mountainous region of north-western Georgia, deep in the Greater Caucasus. Surrounded by some of the highest peaks in the region, it is renowned for its dramatic landscapes, remote villages and distinctive medieval stone towers, which have become one of the symbols of this part of Georgia.
For centuries, geographical isolation helped preserve a remarkably distinctive local culture. The Svans, the indigenous people of the region, maintain their own traditions and speak a language belonging to the Kartvelian language family that is distinct from Georgian.
The famous defensive towers were built mainly between the ninth and thirteenth centuries beside family homes. They provided protection and refuge during periods of conflict and remain a defining feature of Svaneti’s historic villages.
The region’s principal town is Mestia, situated at an altitude of around 1,500 metres. It provides the most convenient base for exploring Svaneti and retains numerous traditional houses accompanied by the characteristic stone towers.
Several routes lead from Mestia through valleys, forests and landscapes dominated by the peaks of the Caucasus. The region has consequently become particularly popular with hikers and travellers interested in mountain scenery.
One of Svaneti’s most remarkable places is Ushguli, a group of small villages situated at an altitude of more than 2,000 metres. Its medieval towers, traditional houses and setting beneath Mount Shkhara create one of Georgia’s most memorable landscapes.
The Upper Svaneti area, which includes Ushguli and its historic settlements, is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its exceptional cultural landscape and surviving medieval architecture.
The region’s old churches are also worth discovering. Many preserve religious art, icons and frescoes that reflect the long Christian tradition of Svaneti’s isolated mountain communities.
June to September is generally the best period for hiking and exploring the mountains, as more trails and roads are accessible. Winter brings heavy snowfall and also makes parts of Svaneti attractive for winter sports.
