Herrstein is a small historic village in Rhineland-Palatinate, western Germany, located in the Hunsrück region. The history of Herrstein is closely connected with the Counts of Sponheim, who controlled this part of the Hunsrück during the Middle Ages. The settlement developed as a fortified centre, and traces of this period can still be seen today. Over subsequent centuries, houses were rebuilt and altered, creating the attractive collection of half-timbered buildings that now defines the historic centre.

What to see in Herrstein

One of the village’s landmarks is the Schinderhannesturm, a tower that formed part of the old fortifications. Its name is associated with Johannes Bückler, better known as Schinderhannes, a famous outlaw active in the region around the turn of the nineteenth century.

Throughout the historic centre there are numerous Fachwerkhäuser, traditional German half-timbered houses. Their exposed wooden frames, varied façades and architectural details create some of Herrstein’s most picturesque views.

Another notable feature is the Clock Tower, connected with the village’s historic defensive system and one of the structures that contributes to its medieval appearance.

It is also worth simply wandering through the narrow streets and looking for small courtyards, fountains and architectural details. Herrstein’s location makes it easy to combine the village with other destinations and countryside in the Hunsrück.

When to visit Herrstein

Spring, summer and early autumn provide pleasant conditions for exploring the village and surrounding countryside. Autumn is especially attractive when the Hunsrück forests change colour.
