Meissen, porcelain, castle and history beside the Elbe

Meissen is one of Saxony’s most attractive historic towns, situated on the River Elbe in eastern Germany, not far from Dresden. Its skyline is dominated by Albrechtsburg Castle and Meissen Cathedral, which stand together on the hill above the old town. The settlement has very early origins: in 929, King Henry I ordered a fortress to be built on the rocky height, establishing a centre that would become important in the political development of Saxony.

The town is internationally famous above all for Meissen porcelain. In 1710, Augustus the Strong established Europe’s first porcelain manufactory inside Albrechtsburg Castle. Production continued there for more than 150 years before moving to another site, permanently linking the name Meissen with European porcelain.

The historic centre is compact and easy to explore on foot. Streets and squares lined with old buildings gradually climb towards the castle hill, while viewpoints reveal attractive panoramas across the Elbe valley.

What to see in Meissen

The city’s most important monument is Albrechtsburg Castle, built between 1471 and 1524 for the brothers Ernest and Albert of Wettin. Designed as a representative residence rather than primarily as a defensive fortress, it became a landmark in German late-Gothic architecture.

Standing beside it is Meissen Cathedral, whose construction began in the thirteenth century. Its Gothic architecture and prominent position make it one of the town’s defining landmarks.

A visit to the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory introduces the craftsmanship and history behind the famous local porcelain, with displays and demonstrations explaining how it is produced.

It is also worth spending time in the old town, wandering around the market square and through the lanes leading uphill towards the castle.

When to visit Meissen

Spring and early autumn provide comfortable conditions for exploring on foot. Summer is also attractive, particularly for combining cultural visits with walks along the Elbe and through the surrounding wine-growing landscape.
