Antequera, prehistoric dolmens and history in the heart of Andalusia

Antequera lies in Málaga Province, in a strategic position at the heart of Andalusia. Surrounded by mountains and agricultural landscapes, the town has a remarkably rich heritage spanning thousands of years, from prehistoric settlements and Roman occupation to Islamic rule and the Christian conquest. Its historic centre is filled with churches, convents, palaces and traditional houses spreading below the hilltop Alcazaba.

The Antequera Dolmens, together with the natural formations of Peña de los Enamorados and El Torcal, are recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. What to see in Antequera

The archaeological complex includes the Menga, Viera and El Romeral dolmens. Menga is particularly impressive because of the enormous stones used to construct its monumental chamber and ranks among Europe’s most remarkable megalithic structures.

Overlooking the historic centre is the Alcazaba of Antequera, a fortress of Islamic origin occupying a commanding position above the town. Nearby stands the Royal Collegiate Church of Santa María la Mayor, an important example of Renaissance architecture.

Walking through central Antequera reveals numerous churches, squares and historic buildings reflecting the prosperity the town experienced during the centuries following the Christian conquest.

Just outside Antequera lies El Torcal, an extraordinary karst landscape where erosion has shaped limestone into unusual formations. Several marked walking trails allow visitors to explore this remarkable natural environment.

When to visit Antequera

Spring and autumn are ideal for combining sightseeing with walking at El Torcal. Summers can be extremely hot, particularly during the middle of the day.
