Douz, the gateway to the Tunisian Sahara and its endless desert landscapes

Douz is one of southern Tunisia’s most fascinating destinations and is widely known as the “Gateway to the Sahara.” Located on the edge of the vast Grand Erg Oriental, it is the perfect starting point for discovering one of the world’s greatest desert landscapes. Endless sand dunes, palm groves, traditional Berber culture and unforgettable desert experiences make Douz one of Tunisia’s most unique travel destinations.

For centuries Douz played an important role as a caravan town linking North Africa with the Sahara. Today it continues to preserve its strong desert identity, offering visitors the opportunity to experience authentic Bedouin traditions while exploring spectacular natural scenery that changes colour throughout the day.

What to see in Douz

The main attraction is undoubtedly the magnificent Sahara Desert, whose impressive dunes begin just outside the town. Visitors can explore the desert on camel rides, four-wheel-drive excursions or quad bike tours, with sunrise and sunset providing some of the most breathtaking views in Tunisia.

Douz’s traditional market is another highlight, where visitors can browse carpets, spices, dates, pottery and locally produced handicrafts. The Sahara Museum introduces the history of nomadic life through traditional clothing, everyday objects and exhibitions dedicated to caravan culture.

Large date palm groves surround the town, creating a striking contrast between the lush oasis and the surrounding desert. During winter, Douz also hosts the famous International Festival of the Sahara, featuring camel races, traditional music, equestrian performances and celebrations of Berber and Bedouin heritage.

When to visit Douz

The best time to visit is between October and April, when temperatures are comfortable for exploring the desert and enjoying outdoor activities. Winter is particularly pleasant and coincides with the Sahara Festival.

With its spectacular dunes, authentic desert culture and unforgettable landscapes, Douz offers one of the most memorable experiences for anyone travelling through southern Tunisia.
