Matmata is one of Tunisia’s most extraordinary destinations and one of North Africa’s most distinctive cultural sites. Located on the edge of the Sahara in southern Tunisia, the village is internationally famous for its unique underground troglodyte houses, carved into the earth to provide natural protection from the intense desert heat. These remarkable dwellings have been inhabited for centuries and remain an important symbol of Berber heritage. What to see in Matmata
The village’s main attraction is its network of troglodyte homes, where rooms are dug into the walls surrounding large underground courtyards. Some remain private residences, while others have been converted into museums or guesthouses that allow visitors to experience this unique style of living.
The most famous site is Hotel Sidi Driss, which became internationally known as the filming location for Luke Skywalker’s family home in Star Wars. Many of the original sets and decorations remain on display, making it one of Tunisia’s most popular attractions for movie fans.
The surrounding area also offers opportunities to visit traditional Berber villages, explore desert landscapes, discover rocky plateaus and enjoy off-road excursions through southern Tunisia. The dramatic scenery provides excellent opportunities for photography and for experiencing one of the country’s most distinctive regions.
When to visit Matmata
The best period to visit is from October to April, when temperatures are pleasant enough for sightseeing and desert excursions. Summers can be extremely hot, especially during the middle of the day.
