Puerto Varas, Chile’s lakeside city beneath the Osorno Volcano

Puerto Varas is one of southern Chile’s most attractive destinations. Set on the shores of Lake Llanquihue in the Los Lagos Region, it is known as the “City of Roses” and is famous for its German heritage, colourful wooden buildings and breathtaking views of the Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes. Founded in the mid-nineteenth century by German settlers, the town combines European traditions with the spectacular scenery of Chilean Patagonia.

Walking through its streets, visitors will discover historic buildings, cosy cafés and a beautiful waterfront overlooking one of South America’s most impressive landscapes.

What to see in Puerto Varas

The city’s best-known landmark is the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, a striking red wooden church inspired by southern German architecture and one of Puerto Varas’ most recognisable buildings.

The Lake Llanquihue waterfront offers magnificent views of the snow-capped Osorno Volcano and is perfect for leisurely walks. Nearby attractions include the spectacular Petrohué Waterfalls and Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park, where visitors can enjoy forests, hiking trails and volcanic scenery.

Puerto Varas also serves as an excellent base for exploring the Chilean Lake District and the northern gateway to Patagonia.

When to visit Puerto Varas

The southern hemisphere summer, from December to March, offers the warmest weather and is ideal for outdoor activities. Spring and autumn provide colourful landscapes and fewer visitors, while winter offers beautiful snow-covered mountain scenery.

With its lakeside setting, German heritage and spectacular natural surroundings, Puerto Varas is one of Chile’s most memorable destinations.
