Isla Grande is the largest island in Colombia’s Rosario Islands, a Caribbean archipelago located off the coast of Cartagena. Surrounded by coral reefs, mangroves and clear tropical waters, it offers a peaceful contrast to the lively streets of the historic city. The island lies within the Corales del Rosario and San Bernardo National Natural Park, a protected marine area created to preserve one of Colombia’s most valuable coastal ecosystems.

Most travellers reach Isla Grande by boat from Cartagena. Day trips are widely available, but staying overnight reveals a quieter side of the island. Once the excursion boats leave, visitors can enjoy calm evenings, Caribbean sunsets and the gentle rhythm of local community life.

Snorkelling is one of the main reasons to visit. The surrounding waters contain colourful fish and coral formations, while guided canoe trips explore narrow channels through the mangroves. Inland paths cross tropical dry forest and connect beaches, small lodges and the village of Orika.

The island’s Afro-Colombian community plays an essential role in protecting and interpreting the landscape. Community-led activities introduce visitors to fishing traditions, local knowledge of the reefs and the cultural history of the Rosario Islands. Small restaurants serve freshly caught seafood, coconut rice, fried plantain and tropical fruit juices.

Isla Grande is not defined by large resorts or busy nightlife. Its appeal lies in swimming, walking, resting beneath the trees and discovering a fragile marine environment that deserves responsible treatment. Travellers should avoid touching coral, leaving waste or disturbing wildlife.

Combining Caribbean scenery, marine biodiversity and living Afro-Colombian culture, Isla Grande is one of the most rewarding nature escapes from Cartagena.
