Piedra del Penol

Piedra del Peñol, also known as El Peñón de Guatapé, is one of Colombia’s most spectacular natural landmarks. Located in the Antioquia region, just a few kilometres from the colourful town of Guatapé and about two hours from Medellín, this enormous granite monolith rises more than 220 metres above a breathtaking landscape of lakes, islands and rolling hills. It is one of Colombia’s most iconic attractions and a must-see destination.

Visitors reach the summit by climbing a remarkable staircase of 740 steps, built into a natural crack running through the rock. Although the climb is challenging, the reward is one of Colombia’s finest panoramic views. From the observation platform, visitors enjoy spectacular vistas across the Guatapé Reservoir, dotted with countless islands and surrounded by lush green countryside.

The rock itself was formed millions of years ago through geological processes that shaped the Andes. It was considered sacred by indigenous communities and today stands as one of Colombia’s best-known natural monuments.

At the base of the monolith, visitors will find cafés, restaurants, souvenir shops and recreational facilities.
