Brighton, England’s vibrant seaside city on the Sussex coast

Brighton is one of the United Kingdom’s best-known seaside destinations. Located on the Sussex coast, just over an hour from London, it is famous for its iconic promenade, lively cultural scene, independent shops and welcoming atmosphere. Once a small fishing village, Brighton became a fashionable resort when the Prince Regent, later King George IV, chose it as his seaside retreat.

Today the city combines elegant architecture, creative neighbourhoods, excellent restaurants and a relaxed coastal lifestyle, making it one of England’s most popular places to visit throughout the year.

What to see in Brighton

The city’s best-known landmark is the historic Brighton Palace Pier, home to amusement rides, arcades and classic seaside attractions overlooking the English Channel.

Just a short walk away stands the magnificent Royal Pavilion, the extraordinary former royal residence famous for its Indian-inspired exterior and lavish Chinese-style interiors. The nearby The Lanes district is filled with narrow streets lined with independent boutiques, antique shops, jewellers, cafés and restaurants.

Other highlights include the Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, the lively seafront promenade and the distinctive pebble beach. For spectacular panoramic views across the city and coastline, visitors can ride the British Airways i360 observation tower.

When to visit Brighton

Spring and summer are ideal for enjoying the beach, festivals and outdoor events. Autumn offers fewer crowds and pleasant temperatures, while winter provides a quieter atmosphere perfect for exploring museums, cafés and historic streets.

With its unique blend of seaside charm, royal history and creative energy, Brighton remains one of southern England’s most attractive destinations.
