Nida, sand dunes and traditional houses on the Curonian Spit

Nida is a small Lithuanian resort on the Curonian Spit, a narrow strip of land separating the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea. Surrounded by forests, sand dunes and water, it is one of Lithuania’s most distinctive destinations and an excellent base for exploring the remarkable landscape of the spit, which is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

For centuries, Nida was primarily a fishing village. Traces of this heritage survive in its characteristic wooden fishermen’s houses, often painted in vivid colours and decorated according to local traditions. Over time, the village also attracted artists and writers drawn by its unusual light, vast dunes and peaceful atmosphere.

Today, Nida remains small enough to explore easily on foot or by bicycle, combining the quiet streets of the village with the extensive natural landscapes surrounding it.

What to see in Nida

One of the main attractions is the Parnidis Dune, reached by paths crossing the sandy landscape. From its summit there are wide views across the Curonian Lagoon, dunes and surrounding peninsula.

In the centre of Nida, the traditional fishermen’s houses are among the most characteristic sights, with their wooden architecture and distinctive colours recalling the settlement’s maritime past.

Nida is also associated with German writer Thomas Mann, who spent his summers here from 1930 to 1932. His former summer house is now a museum and cultural centre.

Another interesting place is the Nida Ethnographic Cemetery, where visitors can see krikštai, traditional wooden grave markers characteristic of the region.

Nida’s position between lagoon and sea also makes it easy to combine cultural sightseeing with walks through the forests and along the broad sandy beaches of the Baltic coast.

When to visit Nida

Late spring and summer are ideal for exploring by bicycle or on foot and enjoying the beaches. Early autumn provides a quieter atmosphere while still allowing visitors to appreciate the surrounding landscape.

With its dunes, fishermen’s houses and Baltic scenery, Nida is one of Lithuania’s most memorable destinations.
