Schliemann was a thief
[August 2012] We went to see the famous Troy with our tour group. I remember learning Schliemann as a remarkable person who fulfilled his dream and belief that Troy really existed, but in fact, he…
Located near Çanakkale in northwestern Turkey, Troy is one of the world’s most famous archaeological sites. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is forever linked to Homer’s Iliad and the legendary Trojan War. Yet beyond the famous tale of the Wooden Horse, Troy reveals more than four thousand years of continuous history, making it one of the most significant archaeological destinations in the Mediterranean.
Excavations have uncovered multiple layers of settlements built one upon another, demonstrating how the city evolved through different civilizations over several millennia. Walking among the ancient walls, monumental gates and residential remains allows visitors to appreciate Troy’s strategic importance at the crossroads between Europe and Asia, where trade, culture and military power converged.
One of the highlights is the reconstructed Trojan Horse, an iconic symbol inspired by Greek mythology that has become synonymous with the city itself. Equally impressive is the award-winning Troy Museum, located beside the archaeological site. Its outstanding collection of artefacts, interactive exhibitions and multimedia displays offers a fascinating journey through the history of Troy from the Bronze Age to the Roman period.
The archaeological park is carefully organised, allowing visitors to distinguish the various phases of construction that transformed the city over thousands of years. Informative panels and walking routes make the site accessible even for travellers with little archaeological knowledge.
Troy is also an excellent starting point for exploring the surrounding region, including the Dardanelles, the Gallipoli Peninsula and the lively coastal city of Çanakkale. Together they create a rewarding itinerary combining archaeology, history and beautiful coastal scenery.
Blending myth, history and remarkable archaeological discoveries, Troy remains one of Turkey’s most unforgettable cultural treasures and an essential destination for anyone fascinated by the ancient world.
