Cartagena de Indias, Colombia’s historic Caribbean jewel

Cartagena de Indias is one of Colombia’s most beautiful cities and one of the Caribbean’s most iconic destinations. Founded by the Spanish in 1533, it became one of the most important ports in the Americas. Today, its beautifully preserved historic centre, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is filled with colourful colonial buildings, lively squares, churches and centuries-old fortifications overlooking the Caribbean Sea.

What to see in Cartagena de Indias

The highlight is the Walled City, surrounded by impressive defensive walls that protected Cartagena from pirate attacks. Inside, visitors will discover picturesque plazas, colonial churches, elegant mansions and countless cafés and restaurants.

The impressive San Felipe de Barajas Castle is the largest Spanish fortress built in South America and offers panoramic views across the city.

Another must-see is Getsemaní, one of Cartagena’s most vibrant neighbourhoods, famous for colourful street art, lively squares and an authentic local atmosphere. From Cartagena it is also easy to visit the beautiful Rosario Islands, renowned for white sandy beaches, coral reefs and crystal-clear Caribbean waters.

When to visit Cartagena de Indias

Cartagena enjoys warm tropical weather throughout the year. The driest months, generally between December and April, offer the best conditions for sightseeing and boat excursions.
