Dartmoor is a vast upland area in Devon, in south-west England. Much of the region is protected within Dartmoor National Park and is characterised by open moorland, valleys, rivers and distinctive granite outcrops known as tors. It is one of England’s most recognisable rural landscapes and offers a striking contrast to Devon’s towns and coastal resorts.
The landscape contains evidence of human occupation dating back thousands of years. Standing stones, stone circles and remains of prehistoric settlements are scattered across the moors, while historic villages, stone bridges and old tracks tell the story of more recent communities.
One of the most characteristic sights is the Dartmoor pony. Ponies have lived on the moor for centuries and can often be seen roaming across the open landscape.
One of the best ways to appreciate Dartmoor is to follow its roads and walking trails, stopping at some of the numerous granite tors. Haytor is among the best known and provides extensive views across the surrounding countryside.
Among Dartmoor’s attractive villages is Widecombe-in-the-Moor, with traditional stone buildings and the impressive Church of St Pancras, whose tall tower is a prominent local landmark.
Another interesting stop is Postbridge, famous for its historic clapper bridge, constructed from large slabs of granite spanning the East Dart River.
On the western edge of the national park, Tavistock is an historic market town with strong connections to the region’s mining heritage and makes a useful base for exploring the moors.
Dartmoor also offers an extensive network of walking routes. Weather conditions can change quickly and some areas are remote, so longer walks require appropriate preparation.
Late spring and summer provide longer days for exploring the moors. Autumn is also particularly atmospheric as the vegetation changes colour. Rain, wind and mist, however, are possible at any time of year.
