Sibiu, one of Romania’s most beautiful medieval cities

Sibiu is one of Romania’s finest historic cities and one of the highlights of any journey through Transylvania. Founded during the twelfth century by Saxon settlers, it preserves one of the best-preserved medieval centres in Eastern Europe. Colourful houses, elegant squares, defensive walls and the city’s famous rooftop windows, often called the “Eyes of Sibiu”, create a unique atmosphere that immediately captivates visitors.

In 2007 Sibiu was named European Capital of Culture, a recognition that helped restore many of its historic buildings and further establish the city as one of Romania’s leading cultural destinations. Today Sibiu combines medieval heritage with museums, galleries, restaurants and lively festivals throughout the year.

What to see in Sibiu

The historic centre revolves around Piata Mare (Grand Square), surrounded by magnificent Baroque buildings, cafés and important landmarks including Brukenthal Palace, home to one of Romania’s oldest art museums, and the Council Tower, which offers panoramic views across the old town.

Just a short walk away lies Piata Mică (Small Square), connected by the famous Bridge of Lies, the first cast-iron bridge built in Romania. According to local legend, the bridge reacts whenever someone tells a lie, making it one of Sibiu’s most photographed attractions.

Other highlights include the impressive Evangelical Cathedral, the beautiful Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral and the charming Lower Town, where medieval streets, fortifications and traditional houses preserve the city’s authentic character.

Visitors interested in Romanian traditions should also explore the ASTRA Museum of Traditional Folk Civilization, one of Europe’s largest open-air museums, featuring historic houses, churches, mills and workshops relocated from different regions of Romania.

When to visit Sibiu

Spring and early autumn provide ideal weather for exploring the city on foot. Summer brings cultural festivals and outdoor events, while winter transforms Sibiu into one of Romania’s most enchanting Christmas destinations thanks to its famous Christmas Market.

Its central location also makes Sibiu an excellent base for exploring the Transfăgărășan Road, Corvin Castle, Sighișoara and many of Transylvania’s historic Saxon villages.
