Aphrodisias is one of Turkey’s finest archaeological sites and one of the best-preserved cities of the ancient Greco-Roman world. Located in the Aydın Province of western Turkey, the city was dedicated to Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty, whose sanctuary attracted pilgrims from across the Mediterranean. Today Aphrodisias is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its exceptional monuments and remarkable state of preservation.
At the heart of the ancient city stands the Temple of Aphrodite, around which Aphrodisias originally developed. Over the centuries the temple was converted into a Christian basilica, reflecting the religious changes that shaped the city throughout its long history. Walking through the archaeological site reveals the evolution of one of the Roman Empire’s most important cultural centres.
One of the site’s greatest highlights is the magnificent Aphrodisias Stadium, nearly 270 metres long and regarded as one of the best-preserved ancient stadiums in the world. It once accommodated around 30,000 spectators for athletic competitions and public events. Visitors should also explore the Theatre, Odeon, Hadrian’s Baths, Agora and the beautifully restored Tetrapylon, the city’s ceremonial gateway.
Aphrodisias gained international fame for its outstanding school of sculpture. High-quality marble from nearby quarries enabled local artists to create masterpieces that were exported throughout the Roman Empire. The Aphrodisias Museum displays an exceptional collection of statues, reliefs and archaeological discoveries.
Surrounded by peaceful countryside, Aphrodisias is an ideal destination for anyone interested in archaeology and ancient history. It is often combined with visits to Ephesus, Pamukkale and Hierapolis during tours of western Turkey.
With extraordinary monuments, artistic heritage and remarkable preservation, Aphrodisias is one of Turkey’s most rewarding UNESCO sites.
