Yalta, the historic resort overlooking the Black Sea

Yalta is one of the best-known cities on the Crimean Peninsula and has long been regarded as one of the Black Sea’s most elegant seaside resorts. Sheltered by the Crimean Mountains, it enjoys a mild climate that has attracted visitors, artists and aristocratic families for generations. The city is also internationally recognised as the location of the Yalta Conference in 1945, where Winston Churchill, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Joseph Stalin met near the end of the Second World War.

Today, Yalta offers a pleasant mix of seaside charm, historic landmarks and spectacular scenery. Its palm-lined promenade, historic palaces and dramatic coastline make it one of the region’s most distinctive destinations.

What to see in Yalta

The lively Yalta Embankment is the city’s main gathering place, lined with cafés, restaurants and beautiful views across the Black Sea.

Just outside the city stands the famous Swallow’s Nest Castle, a picturesque neo-Gothic building perched dramatically on a cliff above the sea and one of Crimea’s most photographed landmarks.

Another highlight is the Livadia Palace, the former summer residence of the Russian Imperial family and the venue of the 1945 Yalta Conference. Nature lovers should also visit the Nikitsky Botanical Garden, home to thousands of plant species from around the world.

The surrounding Crimean Mountains offer scenic viewpoints, hiking trails and cable cars overlooking the coastline.
