Kavala, the elegant harbour city of northern Greece
Kavala is one of the most attractive destinations in northern Greece. Overlooking the Aegean Sea in the region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, it combines centuries of history with a lively harbour, beautiful coastal scenery and a welcoming Mediterranean atmosphere. Built amphitheatrically on the slopes of a hill, the city enjoys magnificent views over the sea and towards the nearby island of Thassos, which can easily be reached by ferry.
Originally founded as the ancient city of Neapolis in the seventh century BC, Kavala later flourished under Byzantine and Ottoman rule. These different periods have left behind remarkable monuments that blend naturally with the modern city. Today visitors can stroll along the waterfront, relax in cafés overlooking the harbour and enjoy one of the most charming urban landscapes in mainland Greece.
What to see in Kavala
The city’s most recognisable landmark is the impressive Kamares Aqueduct, originally built in Roman times and rebuilt by the Ottomans during the sixteenth century. Its massive stone arches dominate the city centre and create one of Kavala’s most iconic views.
The picturesque Panagia district, the oldest part of the city, features narrow cobbled streets, colourful traditional houses and several Ottoman-era buildings. At the top stands the Castle of Kavala, offering spectacular panoramic views across the harbour and the Aegean Sea.
Visitors should also explore the lively waterfront, the marina and the House of Mehmet Ali, birthplace of the founder of modern Egypt. Those with extra time can easily visit the nearby Archaeological Site of Philippi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Greece’s most important ancient cities.
When to visit Kavala
Spring and early autumn provide the most comfortable weather for sightseeing. Summer is ideal for combining cultural visits with relaxing days on nearby beaches or excursions to Thassos.
With its fascinating history, beautiful seafront and authentic Greek atmosphere, Kavala is one of northern Greece’s most rewarding destinations.
