Miyakojima, tropical beaches and turquoise waters in Okinawa

Miyakojima is one of the most beautiful islands in Okinawa Prefecture, in southern Japan. Surrounded by the clear waters of the East China Sea and Pacific Ocean, it is best known for long white-sand beaches, coral reefs and remarkably vivid shades of turquoise. The island is relatively flat, making it easy to explore its coastline, small communities and tropical landscapes.

Miyakojima reveals a side of Japan that feels far removed from the country’s large metropolitan areas. Its subtropical climate, Ryukyu heritage and distinctive local food contribute to its relaxed atmosphere. Spectacular bridges connect the main island with nearby Irabu, Ikema and Kurima islands, allowing visitors to discover several different coastal landscapes during the same trip.

What to see in Miyakojima

One of the island’s most celebrated beaches is Yonaha Maehama, a long stretch of fine white sand facing exceptionally clear, shallow water. Its tropical scenery has made it one of Miyakojima’s signature attractions.

On the eastern tip of the island, Higashi-Hennazaki is a narrow cape extending into the ocean. A lighthouse stands near its end, surrounded by impressive views of the coastline and open sea.

Driving across the Irabu Bridge is another memorable experience. Stretching for more than three kilometres, it links Miyakojima with Irabu Island and offers spectacular views over the turquoise water. Bridges also connect Miyakojima with Ikema and Kurima.

The surrounding coral-rich waters make the island excellent for snorkelling and diving, with tropical fish and varied underwater scenery. Numerous beaches and sheltered bays also provide plenty of opportunities simply to swim and relax.

When to visit Miyakojima

Spring and autumn combine warm temperatures with comfortable conditions for exploring. Summer offers excellent beach weather but is hotter and also brings a greater possibility of typhoons.

With its white beaches, coral reefs, scenic bridges and Okinawan culture, Miyakojima is one of Japan’s most remarkable tropical island destinations.
