Tokyo, tradition and modern life in Japan’s capital

Tokyo is the capital of Japan and one of the world’s largest metropolitan areas. It is a city of striking contrasts, where skyscrapers, shopping districts and advanced technology coexist with temples, shrines, gardens and neighbourhoods that preserve a more traditional atmosphere.

Modern Tokyo developed from Edo, which became the centre of political power under the Tokugawa shogunate at the beginning of the seventeenth century. In 1868, following the Meiji Restoration and the transfer of the imperial residence, Edo was renamed Tokyo, meaning “eastern capital”.

The city is enormous and each district has its own character. Shinjuku presents one of Tokyo’s most modern faces, Asakusa retains connections with the historic city, Ginza is renowned for shopping, while Shibuya represents its youthful and energetic side.

What to see in Tokyo

One of Tokyo’s best-known historic landmarks is Sensō-ji in Asakusa, the city’s oldest Buddhist temple. The impressive Kaminarimon Gate leads towards Nakamise-dori, a lively street lined with small shops.

At the heart of Tokyo is the Imperial Palace, occupying the site of the former Edo Castle and surrounded by moats, stone walls and extensive green spaces.

At Meiji Jingu, near Harajuku, visitors can leave the busy streets behind and enter a large wooded area surrounding one of Tokyo’s most important Shinto shrines.

For contemporary Tokyo, Shibuya is famous for its huge pedestrian crossing, while Shinjuku combines skyscrapers, shops, restaurants and one of the world’s busiest railway stations.

It is also worth exploring contrasting neighbourhoods such as Ueno, Yanaka, Akihabara and Ginza. This remarkable variety is one reason why Tokyo deserves several days rather than a brief visit.

When to visit Tokyo

Spring is especially popular during the cherry blossom season, while autumn brings comfortable temperatures and colourful foliage. Summer is hot and humid, whereas winter is generally drier and often provides clear skies.
