Nestled within Mavrovo National Park, overlooking the Radika River Valley beneath Mount Bistra, Saint Jovan Bigorski Monastery is one of North Macedonia’s most treasured Orthodox monasteries. Founded during the eleventh century and dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, it combines centuries of spiritual tradition with remarkable artistic heritage. Surrounded by forests and dramatic mountain scenery, the monastery offers visitors one of the country’s most memorable cultural experiences.
Its greatest masterpiece is the extraordinary carved wooden iconostasis, widely regarded as one of the finest examples of woodcarving in the Orthodox world. Created during the nineteenth century by master craftsmen from western Macedonia, the intricate structure features thousands of hand-carved biblical scenes, floral motifs and religious symbols. The exceptional craftsmanship alone makes the monastery a destination of international significance.
Inside the church, visitors discover beautifully preserved frescoes, ancient icons and sacred relics that reflect the monastery’s long religious history. Despite suffering damage from fires over the centuries, the complex has been carefully restored while preserving its peaceful atmosphere and authentic monastic character.
The monastery is ideally located for exploring Mavrovo National Park, an area renowned for forests, rivers, mountain landscapes and traditional villages. Nearby attractions include the Monastery of Saint George in Rajčica and the picturesque mountain village of Galičnik, famous for its traditional architecture and annual folk wedding festival.
Visitors also experience the living traditions of Orthodox monastic life. Resident monks welcome pilgrims and travellers alike, while the monastery shop offers honey, herbal teas, handmade products and traditional liqueurs produced according to centuries-old recipes.
Combining sacred art, history and breathtaking natural surroundings, Saint Jovan Bigorski Monastery stands among the most remarkable religious monuments in the Balkans.
