The Sierra de Francia is a mountainous region in the south of Salamanca Province, in Castile and León. The area is characterised by wooded mountains, valleys, streams and historic villages that have preserved much of their traditional architecture. Far removed from Spain’s busiest tourist destinations, it offers a peaceful rural landscape with a strong connection to local history and traditions.
One of the most appealing features of the Sierra de Francia is its collection of small villages. Stone and timber houses, balconies, arcades and narrow streets characterise settlements that developed over centuries while adapting to the mountainous terrain.
Much of the area is also protected within the Las Batuecas-Sierra de Francia Natural Park, where Mediterranean vegetation meets mountain landscapes, creating a particularly varied natural environment.
The best-known village is La Alberca, famous for its beautifully preserved historic centre. Walking through its narrow streets reveals traditional houses combining stone, timber structures and distinctive balconies.
Another fascinating village is Mogarraz, where portraits of former and present inhabitants decorate many house façades, transforming its streets into an unusual open-air gallery.
Also worth visiting are Miranda del Castañar, with its castle and historic walls, and San Martín del Castañar, a small village surrounded by the landscapes of the sierra.
For panoramic views, visitors can travel up to Peña de Francia, one of the region’s most distinctive mountains. A sanctuary stands at the summit, which offers extensive views across the surrounding mountains and plains on clear days.
The Sierra de Francia also has numerous walking trails through forests, valleys and villages, making it easy to combine cultural sightseeing with time in nature.
Spring and autumn are particularly pleasant for exploring the villages and walking trails. Autumn brings beautiful colours to the forests, while summer is also suitable for hiking if the hottest hours of the day are avoided.
