Village I wanted to walk
[ Dec.2008 ] In that morning the view from the car was simply flat but after a while, without notice, we were in a mountainous area in Tunisia. Suddenly this village called Toujane came in…
Toujane is one of the most picturesque Berber villages in southern Tunisia. Perched high in the Dahar Mountains between Matmata and Medenine, it is renowned for its breathtaking views, traditional stone houses and authentic Berber heritage. Far from Tunisia’s busiest tourist routes, Toujane offers visitors the opportunity to discover a peaceful mountain village where history, culture and spectacular landscapes come together.
For centuries Berber communities have lived in this rugged environment, adapting their architecture and way of life to the surrounding hills. Many local traditions, crafts and customs remain alive today, making Toujane one of the most authentic destinations in the region.
The village itself is the main attraction, with its narrow streets, stone houses and panoramic viewpoints overlooking the Dahar Mountains. Visitors can stroll through quiet lanes, admire traditional architecture and browse small workshops selling handmade Berber carpets, textiles and local crafts.
The scenic road leading to Toujane is considered one of the most beautiful drives in southern Tunisia, offering spectacular mountain landscapes throughout the journey. Nearby attractions include Matmata, famous for its underground troglodyte homes, and several historic ksour, the fortified granaries that have become symbols of the region’s Berber heritage.
Photographers will especially appreciate the warm light of sunrise and sunset, when the mountains and stone buildings take on beautiful golden colours.
The best time to visit is from October to April, when temperatures are comfortable for exploring the village and surrounding mountains. Summers can be extremely hot throughout southern Tunisia.
With its stunning scenery, preserved Berber traditions and peaceful atmosphere, Toujane is one of Tunisia’s hidden cultural treasures.
