Gibraltar is one of Europe’s most distinctive destinations. Located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, it overlooks the Strait of Gibraltar, where the Mediterranean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean and where Europe and Africa are separated by only a few kilometres. Although it is a British Overseas Territory, Gibraltar combines British traditions with Mediterranean culture, creating a unique atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Europe.
The most famous landmark is the Rock of Gibraltar, a massive limestone ridge rising more than 400 metres above sea level. From its viewpoints visitors can enjoy spectacular panoramas over the Strait, the Spanish coastline and, on clear days, even the mountains of Morocco. The Rock is also home to fascinating natural caves, historic military tunnels, scenic walking trails and the famous Barbary macaques, the only wild monkeys living in Europe.
Walking through the town centre reveals an unusual blend of cultures. Traditional British pubs, red telephone boxes and colonial architecture stand alongside Mediterranean cafés, lively squares and duty-free shops. Gibraltar’s strategic location has made it one of the most important military and trading outposts in Europe for centuries, leaving behind a remarkable historical heritage.
Despite its small size, Gibraltar offers much more than many travellers expect. Nature, history, spectacular scenery and cultural diversity can all be experienced within a relatively short distance, making it an ideal destination for a day trip or as part of a longer journey through southern Spain.
