Akita

Akita, the capital of Akita Prefecture in northern Honshu, offers visitors an authentic experience of traditional Japan. Surrounded by mountains, forests and the Sea of Japan, the city is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, seasonal festivals, hot springs and natural beauty. It is also internationally known as the birthplace of the loyal Akita Inu dog breed.

One of the city’s main attractions is Senshū Park, built on the former site of Kubota Castle. The park is especially beautiful during cherry blossom season and autumn foliage, while its walking paths, gardens and historical museum provide insight into the history of the Satake clan.

Akita is famous for the spectacular Kantō Festival, held every August. During the festival, performers balance enormous bamboo poles carrying dozens of illuminated lanterns, creating one of Japan’s most impressive traditional celebrations and attracting visitors from around the world.

The surrounding region is equally rewarding. Visitors can explore Lake Tazawa, Japan’s deepest lake, or relax in the historic Nyūtō Onsen hot spring area within Towada-Hachimantai National Park. Hiking, scenic drives and seasonal landscapes make Akita an excellent destination throughout the year.

Local cuisine is another highlight. Specialties include kiritanpo, grilled rice sticks, the delicate Inaniwa udon noodles and premium sake brewed from high-quality local rice.
