Telč, Renaissance houses and history in the heart of Moravia

Telč is a small historic town in the Czech Republic, located in the Vysočina Region between Bohemia and Moravia. Its historic centre is one of Central Europe’s best-preserved examples of Renaissance urban architecture and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992. The town is particularly famous for its magnificent central square, surrounded by colourful houses with decorated façades and long arcades.

Much of Telč’s present appearance dates from the sixteenth century. Following a fire that damaged many buildings, medieval houses were reconstructed according to the Renaissance tastes of the period. Individual owners decorated their properties with different colours, ornamental details and distinctive gables, creating the harmonious architectural ensemble that visitors see today.

Telč is compact enough to explore comfortably on foot. Beyond its famous square and château, ponds, historic churches and remnants of fortifications add to the atmosphere of this remarkably well-preserved town.

What to see in Telč

The heart of the town is Zachariáš of Hradec Square, a long open space lined with elegant Renaissance and Baroque houses. Arcades run beneath many of the buildings, while their façades display a remarkable variety of colours and decorative styles.

At one end of the square stands Telč Château, transformed during the sixteenth century from a Gothic stronghold into an elegant Renaissance residence. Its historic interiors contain richly decorated halls, while the complex also includes courtyards and a garden.

Other notable monuments include the Church of St James and the Church of the Holy Name of Jesus, both important features of the historic skyline.

Walking beyond the main square reveals sections of the old fortifications and the ponds surrounding parts of Telč, reminders of the town’s medieval defensive system.

When to visit Telč

Spring and early autumn are excellent for exploring the historic centre in comfortable temperatures. Summer provides long days for sightseeing but also attracts more visitors.

With its colourful façades, Renaissance château and beautifully preserved centre, Telč is one of the Czech Republic’s most charming historic towns.
