Set on the rugged Bay of Biscay coastline, Bermeo is one of the Basque Country’s most authentic fishing towns. Once the region’s principal fishing port, it still preserves a deep connection with the sea through its traditions, cuisine and lively harbour. Colourful waterfront buildings, medieval streets and spectacular natural surroundings make Bermeo an ideal destination for travellers looking to experience the genuine character of northern Spain.

The harbour remains the centre of local life. Fishing boats arrive daily with fresh catches that supply the town’s restaurants, where visitors can enjoy outstanding seafood, tuna, anchovies and traditional Basque pintxos. Local txakoli wine perfectly complements the region’s renowned maritime cuisine, creating one of the most rewarding culinary experiences on Spain’s northern coast.

The historic centre reflects Bermeo’s long maritime history. Narrow streets lead to landmarks such as the Ercilla Tower, now home to the Fishermen’s Museum, which tells the story of the town’s centuries-old relationship with the Atlantic. Nearby stand the Church of Santa Eufemia and several historic squares that preserve the atmosphere of medieval Bermeo.

Just outside the town lies one of Spain’s most famous coastal landmarks: San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. Connected to the mainland by a stone bridge and a staircase climbing more than 200 steps, the tiny island became internationally famous after appearing in Game of Thrones. Its dramatic setting has made it one of the Basque Country’s most visited attractions.

Bermeo also serves as an excellent gateway to the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO-protected natural area of wetlands, forests and estuaries rich in birdlife and biodiversity. Coastal hiking trails offer breathtaking views across cliffs and the Atlantic Ocean, making the region especially attractive for photographers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Combining maritime heritage, exceptional gastronomy and some of northern Spain’s most spectacular coastal scenery, Bermeo remains one of the Basque Country’s hidden treasures.
