Bad Schandau
Bad Schandau is a small spa town in Saxony, eastern Germany, set on the banks of the River Elbe and surrounded by the spectacular landscapes of Saxon Switzerland National Park. It is an ideal destination for travellers who enjoy nature, walking and places where the landscape becomes the real highlight of the journey.
The centre of Bad Schandau is compact and pleasant to explore on foot. Its main square, traditional buildings and riverside retain the peaceful atmosphere of a holiday resort, while the town’s spa facilities reflect a tradition that has played an important role in its development since the nineteenth century.
One of Bad Schandau’s most distinctive attractions is its historic panoramic elevator, built in the early twentieth century. It takes visitors quickly to higher ground above the town, offering beautiful views across the Elbe Valley and the surrounding hills.
However, it is Bad Schandau’s location that makes the town particularly appealing. It provides an excellent base for exploring Saxon Switzerland, a remarkable region of deep valleys, forests and dramatic sandstone rock formations. Walking trails of varying difficulty lead through this landscape and towards some of its most impressive viewpoints.
The River Elbe is also an important part of the experience. Flowing quietly through the valley, it connects Bad Schandau with other towns and villages in the region and creates beautiful scenery along its banks.
Bad Schandau is not a destination dominated by major monuments or famous landmarks. Its charm comes instead from the combination of a small spa town, the river and the extraordinary natural surroundings. Here, nature never feels far away: forests, cliffs and walking paths begin almost as soon as the streets of the town come to an end.
