Hydra, a car-free Greek island in the Saronic Gulf

Hydra is one of the most distinctive islands in Greece’s Saronic Gulf, known for its elegant harbour, stone houses and, above all, the almost complete absence of motor vehicles. People mainly move around the town on foot, while traditional mules remain part of everyday island life.

The heart of Hydra is its main town, built like an amphitheatre around the harbour. Pale stone houses with tiled roofs climb the surrounding hills, creating one of the most recognisable townscapes among the Greek islands.

Hydra experienced a period of considerable prosperity during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries thanks to its merchant fleet. During the Greek War of Independence, which began in 1821, the island’s wealthy ship-owning families and their vessels played an important role in the struggle against Ottoman rule.

What to see on Hydra

A visit naturally begins at Hydra harbour, surrounded by historic buildings, cafés and restaurants. Walking along the waterfront and then following the narrow lanes uphill is one of the best ways to experience the town.

Among the most interesting historic buildings are the former shipowners’ mansions, reminders of the wealth created by Hydra’s maritime activities. Some now house museums and cultural institutions.

Close to the harbour stands the Monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, one of the island’s principal religious buildings.

One of Hydra’s most enjoyable walks follows the coast from the harbour towards Kamini, a small settlement with a picturesque harbour. The path can be continued towards beaches and other bays along the coast.

During the twentieth century, Hydra also became popular with international artists and writers. Leonard Cohen spent long periods on the island, helping establish its reputation as a meeting place for artists and intellectuals.

When to visit Hydra

Spring and early autumn are ideal for walking and exploring the island in comfortable temperatures. Summer is perfect for swimming and seaside activities but is also the busiest period.
