Zakynthos, dramatic beaches and turquoise waters in the Ionian Sea

Zakynthos, also widely known as Zante, is one of Greece’s Ionian Islands, lying in the Ionian Sea west of the Peloponnese. Famous for its intensely turquoise waters and dramatic western cliffs, the island also offers sandy beaches, traditional villages, sea caves and lush Mediterranean vegetation. It is an excellent destination for combining swimming and boat trips with drives and excursions through the countryside.

The landscape changes considerably from one side of the island to another. The eastern coastline has numerous accessible beaches and seaside resorts, while the west is wilder, with high limestone cliffs plunging into the sea. Zakynthos is also an important Mediterranean habitat for the loggerhead sea turtle, Caretta caretta, which nests on several beaches in the south of the island.

What to see in Zakynthos

The island’s most famous sight is Navagio Beach, enclosed by towering white cliffs and instantly recognisable because of the shipwreck resting on its sand. Access conditions can change for safety reasons, but the spectacular landscape can also be admired from viewpoints above.

The Blue Caves, on the northern coastline, are another remarkable natural attraction. Sunlight reflecting through the clear water creates vivid blue colours inside the caves and around the natural rock arches.

Southern Zakynthos is home to the National Marine Park of Zakynthos, established to protect the coastal ecosystem and particularly the nesting areas used by loggerhead turtles.

It is also worth spending time in Zakynthos Town, much of which was rebuilt following the devastating 1953 earthquake. Solomos Square, the waterfront and historic churches reveal a different side of the island.

When to visit Zakynthos

May, June and September are excellent months for combining beaches and sightseeing with warm temperatures and generally fewer visitors than in August. Summer provides the classic Greek island experience with hot weather and warm seas.

With its cliffs, sea caves, protected wildlife and beautiful beaches, Zakynthos is one of the most spectacular islands in Greece.
