Lefkara, Cyprus’ village of lace, silver and timeless traditions

Lefkara, officially known as Pano Lefkara, is one of Cyprus’ most beautiful traditional villages. Nestled on the south-eastern foothills of the Troodos Mountains in the Larnaca district, it is internationally famous for its exquisite Lefkaritika lace, recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage, and for its centuries-old silversmithing tradition. Wandering through its narrow stone streets reveals a village where history and craftsmanship remain part of everyday life.

According to local tradition, Leonardo da Vinci visited Lefkara in 1481 and purchased a lace cloth that was later donated to Milan Cathedral. Today, visitors can still watch artisans producing lace and silverware using techniques passed down through generations.

What to see in Lefkara

The historic centre is filled with cobbled lanes, stone-built houses, colourful balconies and workshops where women create the famous Lefkaritika lace while silversmiths continue one of Cyprus’ oldest craft traditions.

Don’t miss the impressive Church of the Holy Cross (Timios Stavros), dating back to the fourteenth century and believed to house a relic of the Holy Cross. Other highlights include the Museum of Traditional Embroidery and Silversmithing, the Folklore Museum and the picturesque village squares.

The surrounding countryside also offers scenic walking trails leading through the Troodos foothills and neighbouring traditional villages.

Spring and autumn are ideal thanks to pleasant temperatures and beautiful countryside. Summer brings cultural festivals and lively village life, while winter offers a peaceful atmosphere for exploring the historic streets.
