It was supposed to be a chaotic town, but…

[Dec. 2025] We arrived in Fez, one of Morocco‘s major cities.

First, we drove through the new city, which seemed like a very orderly metropolis.

Here too, we stayed in a riad located in the medina.

It was called Riad Ahlam.

Unlike the riad in Chefchaouen the previous night, which was a complex, labyrinthine building, this one had a simpler structure with rooms arranged around a covered courtyard.

Our room was named Jasmine.

The room was spacious but long, and there wasn’t enough space to open two suitcases.

The bathroom was also spacious.

However, the manager was strangely overly polite, which felt rather creepy.

He didn’t seem to have any malicious intent, though.

We stayed here for two nights.

At breakfast on the second day, there were two Japanese women, so it might be listed in Japanese guidebooks.

On the evening of our arrival, my husband’s condition had improved considerably, so after a short rest, we went to a restaurant called Encanto, which had good reviews online.

We were looking for a place that served Western food to give our stomachs a rest.

Although, it was more like Moroccan-style Western food.

My husband had vegetable pizza, and I had chicken with cream sauce.

It wasn’t particularly delicious, but it was cheap.

Including schweppes, the total was 170 dirhams (about 15.70 euros).

Similar to the previous day, it was a half-open shack, hardly worthy of being called a restaurant, but it was clearly popular, with people constantly coming in and some even making reservations.

On the way there and back, we walked around the medina a bit, and it was much cleaner than I remembered.

Thirty years ago, donkeys roamed between shops where whole cuts of meat hung, and you had to carefully manoeuvre around them.

Now, however, ordinary shops line the covered streets.

There were still some butcher shops with meat hanging, though.

What we saw that day was just the beginning; we would see the real thing the next day.

It started raining on the way back, so we fled back to the riad.
