The beautiful riad

The beautiful riad

[Dec. 2025] We stayed at Riad la Maison Blanche in Tangier, an old port city in northern Morocco.

On this trip, most of our accommodations were riads (traditional old mansions converted into hotels), and the riads themselves were a highlight.

Riad la Maison Blanche is one of them.

The shape of the door frame, the carved wooden door, and the chic dark brown colour scheme are all very tasteful.

As I mentioned earlier, Moroccan decor can be either stylish or kitschy, and this interior was lovely and not over the top.

My husband commented that it felt like a pousada (in Portugal).

The bathroom was spacious and even had a bathtub.

There was a fountain in the covered courtyard, so this riad appears to have retained its original form.

The only downside was that it was cold.

They provided two portable heaters, but they didn’t heat the entire room.

This is common in warm countries.

They may be able to handle the summer heat, but they seem to underestimate the winter cold.

While we were resting, the owner came over and showed us to the rooftop.

It was just sunset, so the view was amazing.

The owner seemed very proud of his house.

Parts of the house were currently being renovated, so it might have been a new riad.

According to the owner, Tangier is cooler in the summer than other parts of Morocco.

This was the only time we met the owner; after that, we were greeted by a young man who seemed to be his son and an older woman who may have been his wife.

These two were really nice.

Although we couldn’t speak the language, it was clear that they were working diligently.

For some reason, the lady was wearing a bathrobe-like jacket the whole time.

I also liked the young man, who behaved very modestly throughout.

To be honest, I haven’t met any Moroccan men who were particularly good-looking, but this young man was really cute.
