[ Oct.2013 ] My friends who have a second house in the north of England introduced us Piel Island, which is in Cumbria where the famous Lake District is.
It is a very small island with only a ruin of a castle and a pub.
We looked at it from the jetty, where it said “Ferries generally available from Easter to September”.
If you want to go to the island out of this period, you need to contact Steve, the owner of the pub, then he will come and pick you up.
My friend said “the owner of the pub is the king”.
I thought he was joking, but apparently every time the owner changes, they have a ceremony, not exactly coronation, but pouring alcohol from above his head and after this ceremony, he will be recognised as a king.
At the jetty there was a monument, too which tells us that Piel Island and Castle were presented to the people by Duke of Buccleuch in 1920 as a war memorial in the Great War.
Duke of Buccleuch is a Scottish aristocrat who owns vast land in the north UK.
Apparently he was going to sell this island, but the town here demanded for the presentation, and eventually he agreed, in fact.
