[ May, 2014 ] In Volterra in Tuscany there is a fine ruin of an ancient Roman theatre.
You can see it from the cliff at the edge of the old town.
I looked up online and found that this theatre was commissioned by a wealthy Etruscan family in the town called Caecina in the 1st century BC.
They showed their intention to reconcile with Roman Empire by dedicating this theatre to Augustus.
Up to about 2000 people could be seated here.
The excavation of this thatre was fairly recent which was in 1951 apparently.
Behind the theatre there is a ruin of Roman bath, too.
This one was built in 4th century and they think by then the theatre was already a ruin.
We looked at these ruins from outside, but you can get in the site if you want.
