[ Jun.2016 ] Apparently Brazil has the largest number of Catholic believers.
I was surprised to see the cathedral in Rio de Janeiro, one of the largest cities in the country, was very modern.
It was built between 1964 and 1979.
The building was designed based on a Mayan pyramid and I could see that the outside was already damaged enough to need some repair work.
But the inside was impressive.
As you can see from the photo, there were four long stained glass were stretching to the ceiling.
The length of them from the floor to the ceiling is as long as 64 metres.
20,000 people can stay in the cathedral including standing.
We did not go, but there was also a Sacred Art Museum in the basement.
Not far from the cathedral, there was Carioca Aqueduct.
This was built in the 18th century and after they stopped using it, they built a tram line on top of it in 1896.
A couple of years ago, there was an accident and they stopped running the train there, but when we were there, we found that they have restarted it.
I missed that, but our tour members said that they saw a train on the aqueduct.
