[ May 2016 ] We went to see a waterfall called Aira Force in Cumbria in northern England. It was nearly raining, but we managed to have a walk without having the umbrellas open. National Trust owns here and has established walking paths. The height of the waterfall is 22 metres. The stream goes down to the lake called Ullswater, which is the second largest in the Lake District. It is big but relatively unknown and according to our friends, not so many tourists come here. One thing we noticed was a tree with many coins buried in. Apparently it is called a Wish Tree and it seems similar to the habit of throwing money in ponds. There was a lovely bridge, made of vertical stones, which is not so common around here, apparently.
After walking we went to a pub for a rest. This pub, Kirkstone Pass Inn is situated the highest point (454 metres) in Cumbria. Our friends told us that it used to be the highest in England, but some others were found and now it is recognised as the third. When it was ‘the highest’, they had a sign and in the sign there was a ghost story, too. Well, this pub has 500 years’ history, so a ghost or two would live here I suppose,
