[ Oct.2016 ] On the next day after a day full of sightseeing in Boston, USA, it was raining.
It rained all day.
Apparently for local people it was a welcome rain, though.
There were some companies running the hop on and hop off ‘trolleys’ going around the city, so we decided to take one.
And we found we had a big problem.
I could not understand the woman selling the tickets of the trolley or the trolley driver’s information well.
I have been living in the UK for a long time, so I can handle most of the things in English, but it was very difficult for me to comprehend the unfamiliar American English.
Afterwards, a friend of ours who has been living in New York for a long time tried to cheer us up, saying “It is difficult to get used to the particular accent of the Bostonian”.
So although we stayed in the trolley, we could hardly understand what he was saying.
The only thing I learned was that the famous Dunkin Donuts company was started here in Boston.
This tour included a boat trip around the port, too, so we got off at the port.
We had to wait for the boat for a while, so we tried a Macchiato in Starbucks which was situated in a building at the port.
To our surprise, they served us big cups with a lot of milk.
I wonder if my husband could not make himself understood, as he ordered it.
Or do Americans think this is Macchiato?
There are many Starbucks in the UK, too, but we have never been there.
After that, we got on the boat and went round the port, but because of the rain, we could not see much.
But I was impressed with the information that the flats facing the port cost 2 million dollars each.
Anyway, this was our unlucky day obviously.
When we went to a restaurant listed in our guide book by taxi, we found out that it had been closed down.
And the restaurant of our second choice was fully booked.
So we had to walk around in the rain and in the end we went in to a huge chain restaurant called Legal Sea Foods.
It was also full of people and we had to wait for about one hour.
We just had to be patient on that day.
Fortunately the food we ate, the local clam chowder and the swordfish dish, was good, though the Riesling wine was a bit too sweet.
