[ Apr.2015 ] The last place we visited in the tour to Northern Cyprus was the wall in Famagusta.
The wall at the end of the row of houses in this photo is the one.
The average height is 15 metres and the thickness is as much as 8 metres.
Venecians who ruled here from the end of the 15th century to 1570 reinforced the original wall.
When Ottoman Turkey attacked Cyprus in 1570, other cities surrendered almost without any fighting, but Famagusta held for 11 months thanks to this wall, though in the end they had to surrender.
When we went up the wall, we could see the lovely sea and some ruins in the old town.
