Declining town

Declining town

[ May, 2014 ] Castletown in Isle of Man was the capital of the island until 1869.

We stayed in the current capital, Douglas, but everybody said that we should visit Castletown.

So I was looking forward to seeing this town.

But apart  from the fine castle, the town itself looked rather sad and declining.

Maybe because the weather was not nice, but I noticed that quite many shops were closed down and empty.

In fact, we saw some closed shops in a part of Douglas, too.

On the other hand, many of the running cars were luxurious ones, particulaly Jaguar seemed to be the island’s trend.

And in the area a little away from the towns, we saw many luxurious houses with large floor space.

Maybe it is something to do with the fact that Isle of Man is a tax haven…

By the way, VAT seemed the same as the mainland UK.

I was hoping to buy things cheaply, so I specifically looked at one thing in a chain store that I wanted to buy, but it was the same price.
