[ May, 2013 ] During the castle tour in southern Germany, we dropped in a village called Oberammergau.
This place is famous for its wood carving.
But what attracted me was those bold pictures on the walls of the houses.
These are their traditional houses.
At the edge of the village, there were houses with pictures describing fairly tales of the Grimm Brother, like ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ and ‘Hansel and Gretel’.
Very pretty, but I wonder if I would want to paint my house like that…
Is it an original graffiti?
This village is also famous for its Passion Play performed with utmost efforts of the villagers every 10 years.
When the Black Death was spread in the early 17th century, only one person died in this village because they boiled the water.
They wanted to say thank you to God and started doing this performance apparently.
A half of the village population of 5000 get involved in this performance and a half million people come and see it from all over the world. There is a disproportionately large theatre near the car park for this.Using this only once in 10 years is too bad, so sometimes Italian opera company and others come and perform there.
Our guide said “This is the most wealthy village in Germany”.
